save time and compile fluxbox /w gentoo's ported emerge (not fink). The address fields are blank because the gnome theme I was running on your dad's computer had white text, for whatever reason non GTK apps use GTK's font color, but none others.

Indeed Fluxbox is nifty... I went all out to compile gnome 2.6 because I have been reading a lot from the developers that suggest they are focusing more and more on usability... wanted to check out what they were up to.
